Three boys, one street, the last hour of a summer day.
Pell makes children's bikes built to be handed down. We filmed the street ride everyone remembers, from the wheels on warm asphalt to the first ride with no hands.
The spot needed riders who actually ride, not actors who’d been taught to, so the three boys came from a local cycling club.
Shot for a phone held upright
It runs vertical, which suits a street: the road climbs the frame and the boys get smaller as they go.
The wheels
We started low on warm asphalt, close enough to hear the tyres.
The hands
The last shot waits for the first ride with no hands. It came on the third take, once we stopped directing and told them to ride home for dinner.
How we found them
We watched a Tuesday training night for an hour before talking to anyone. The whole casting is in the journal: Casting three riders from a cycling club.
