Brumel Ostra
The shift change at a steel plant, from the gate in the mist to the last bus out.
A recruitment film for a steelworks that wanted the job shown the way the crews know it: the mist at the gate, the iron stairs, the food cart by the wall and the bus home.
Kessel needed new crews, and they wanted the job shown the way the people already there would describe it.
What the crews told us to keep
Isak asked the shift what they’d miss if they left, and their answers became the shot list.
The gate in the morning mist.
The iron stairs, loud under boots.
The food cart by the wall.
The bus home, last one out.
Forty hours down to one shift change
I watched everything once before cutting anything, then built the film on the sound of the shift change rather than the pictures. The edit is in the journal: Four days of mist, cut to ninety seconds.
